What is Music?
Music Day 2021: “My music is the spiritual expression of what I am – my faith, my knowledge, my being … When you begin to see the possibilities of music, your desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hangups … I want to speak to their souls.”
World Music Day 2021
The world celebrated World Music Day on the 21st of June every year. This is the day when the world celebrates music at its best.
Music is something that is loved by everyone. People may have different tastes and preferences, but mainly there would hardly anyone who would say no to music. Over time, there have been different types of music that we have come across or different nations have shared with each other.
How And When World Music Day Started
In October of 1981, Jack Lang, Minister of Culture of France, appointed Maurice Fleuret as Director of Music and Dance, and the two conceived a plan to bring out musicians on the streets to play together. And so on June 21, 1982, the first Fête de la Musique took place in Paris, with thousands of citizens across France coming out to play.
The event became so popular that it spread across the world and was adopted by over 120 nations, including India. The day is usually celebrated by musicians coming out to play their instruments in the streets, parks, stadiums, and theatres. Free concerts are organized where musicians play for fun and entertainment and not for money.
Why is music so powerful in science?
I’m a big fan of music and use it a lot when working, but I had no idea about how it really affects our brains and bodies. Since music is such a big part of our lives, I thought it would be interesting and useful to have a look at some of the ways we react to it without even realizing it.
Why World Music Day is Celebrated
The starting of World Music Day was with the motto of spreading awareness about the soothing nature of music. Also, there were two of the most obvious reasons among which the first one is to offer amateur professionals a platform to display their talent in front of the audience. Along with this, the second reason is that a number of free concerts can be organized so that the audience can know about the different genres of music and can come across various forms of music from across the world.
Many of the countries also believe that World Music Day is celebrated to spread awareness about the benefits of music. Some of the amazing benefits of music that everyone will agree to are:
- Makes everyone happy
- Helps to sleep better
- It helps in reducing stress
- Helps in setting up a particular mood
- It helps in putting in life at a party
Who Started World Music Day?
In the year 1981, the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived this idea. Since then, this day has been celebrated annually as a World Music Day in many countries worldwide.
Does Music Affect Your Mood?
No one knows why music has such a potent effect on our emotions. Research shows that even sad music can lift your mood, while other studies suggest music can boost happiness and reduce anxiety.
From the drumbeats of our ancient ancestors to today’s unlimited streaming services, music is an integral part of the human experience. Researchers have pondered the possible therapeutic and mood-boosting benefits of music for centuries.
Why is music so powerful?
Studies suggest that someday music may even help patients heal from Parkinson’s disease or a stroke. Music has the ability to evoke powerful emotional responses—both chills and thrills—in listeners. And this capacity is universal. All cultures have some form of music, from the most advanced to those still using stone-age technology.
Humanity only developed reading and writing about three thousand years ago, but we were singing and making music millennia beforehand—some of the earliest man-made items ever found were musical instruments.
What are the 3 roles of music?
1. For the celebration
From parties and get-togethers to holiday observations and competitive sports events, music is used as a way to drum up a celebratory mood. This is probably the most popular use of music Many cultures also use music to celebrate things like the arrival of a newborn baby or the memory of a loved one during a funeral. This use of music for celebrating, in human culture, goes back to ancient times. For example, when armies would have musical celebrations after conquests.
2. Providing a voice for the masses
This has been manifested in a number of ways, either through one or several artists creating music to represent the views of a segment of people or a group creating lyrics, or borrowing from popular songs, to use in a movement, such as in a protest. During uproarious periods, there have been a number of songs that served as a voice for many people. Examples include “Give Peace A Chance” by Plastic Ono Band.
3. Promoting expression in movement (dance)
Although an art form in itself, dancing is often accompanied by music, which often helps to communicate the meaning of the movements and vice versa. Skillful dancers are usually able to not only move in syncopation with the rhythm but also use their moves to portray the essence of the piece of music being played.
Why does music touch the soul?
Although the music of today’s generation has great artists and music, the music in earlier generations such as Styx is different and better than the music of today. Their music appears to have more meaning in the lyrics. The lyrics sing about people being in love, losing love, the meaning of life, and life experiences, instead of vulgar language, drugs, and violence, like music today.
